When you're not feeling yourself one great piece of advice we're given is to 'wear your favourite outfit, it'll be build your confidence right back up'. Colour has the same effect on us. If you've already read some AW21 trend reports you'll see the phrase 'colour therapy' talked about a lot when describing this trend. As it's absolutely spot on. By wearing a bright, positive colour that shines, it will help you radiate happiness and cheer up whoever may be looking at you.

We are desperately craving colour and attention seeking tones after spending over a year in black tracksuits and grey hoodies. So it was refreshing and exciting to see Off-White, Prada, Burberry, Christian Sirano and Versace filling their runways with a rainbow of colour. From saturated outerwear and tailoring to jewel tone dresses, it was the positivity we've all been craving. This drastic change in colour will help our mindsets snap out of the lockdown gloom and look to the new future.

For those of you who already love to dress boldly, this trend will be like second nature to you. You'll feel at home in Other Stories' orange puff shoulder midi dress and River Island's purple two piece suit. You'll also be very happy to invest in Staud's red PU shoulder bag, knowing you'll wear it with every outfit. I absolutely love your confidence and playfulness.

But for the other half like me who are a little more shy when it comes to wearing colour and feel much more comfortable in whites and neutrals, we can still participate in this trend, one piece at a time. The minimal silhouette of Topshop's slip dress balances out the brightness of the lime green and can be paired with simple black accessories while Nasty Gal's cobalt blue wrap jacket has a cool girl ease to it that tones downs the playfulness of the colour. Lastly, don't be afraid to add a splash of colour to your back-to-work wardrobe with Mango's tweed jacket. The traditional silhouette and fabric makes this timeless but the colour brings into the new season.

Whether you're a natural at wearing colour or leaving your comfort zone, this trend is all about reminding ourselves about the fun that can be had with fashion!

Here's how you can wear the trend now...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like we've been pretty lucky with the weather this year. Only in the past couple of weeks have we really felt the weather turn and Autumn arrive. And what does the changing of  the seasons mean? It's time to fill those shelves and drawers with an abundance of knitwear.

While wearing knitwear in the autumn and winter months is nothing new, every year brings different trends when it comes to our favourite jumpers and cardigans. For Autumn/Winter 20 the big three are cable knit, collars and vests. Overall it has a slight masculine tone, evoking memories of your dad's or grandad's jumper draws in the 90s, but in this decade it feels far more feminine and polished.

The cable knit is a one stop wonder and will look just chic if it's paired with lounge shorts or oversized jeans. A collared jumper or cardigan is a great transitional piece, both in and out of the season and gives any outfit a laidback tailored feel. Finally, the knitted vest top is already very popular with influencers and followers alike wearing long sleeve oversized shirts underneath or, for the ones who don't feel the cold, they dare to bare the arms.

Whether you pick one trend or all three, these are the pieces that will get through the next few months however they may be.

The final accessories trend of Spring Summer 20 is the textured bag. Having a woven straw bag as part of your summer wardrobe may not be a new idea, but whereas in the past it's just felt like 'a bag' you'd pull out of the summer box year after year, this season the trend takes centre stage and has been extended to include other textures.

Jil Sander's oversized canvas tote bag and Jacquemus' mini straw bag with frayed edges put this trend at the forefront of the season, while Loewe's woven basket tote is having a real moment with nearly every influencer and editor posting their own bag in various summer scenarios.

Other brands have invested in this trend with Boyy redesigning their buckle tote bag to include woven and canvas options and the majority of Cult Gaia's collection is made up of bamboo, straw and wood. Both Anine Bing and Sporty & Rich launched their own canvas shopper bags which are perfect for a day spent at the beach, running errands or the kind of day where you need to carry your entire life around with you. The high street has a wide selection for us to shop from with Arket, Mango and Nasty Gal taking inspired from the likes of Jil Sander, Loewe and Cult Gaia respectively.

The key footwear trend for SS20 is the square toe heel. Proenza Schouler and Emilia Wickstead put this style on their SS20 runways but it was really Bottega Veneta which made this shoe a sensation and a must have. Very quickly fashion editors, influencers and buyers were rushing out to purchase a pair and brands like Rejina Pyo, Wandler and Aeyde catered to the demand quickly.

The square toe shoe may feel like a modern transition for your footwear but it's actually another 90s revival - these sandals and mules were worn by likes of Kate Moss, J-Lo and Halle Berry. This sleek, grown-up style adds an unmistakable elegance to whatever you're wearing, whether it's a midi skirt for the evening, tailored trousers for work or jeans for the weekend.

Skin-coloured tones like ASOS and H&M's sandals extend the legs, while minimal pairs from & Other Stories and NA-KD add an effortless touch to your outfit. Alternatively, if you want to make your shoes the centre of attention, Topshop's chain detail sandals ticks off the micro-trend 'shoewellery'.

A key accessories trend for Spring Summer 20, hammered jewellery has swept both the high street and designer market. Creating textured pieces like this can offer the customer a piece of jewellery that feels beautifully used and worn down or it can produce something unique bearing curves and dips no other item has.

Alighieri was one of the first brands I was aware of that were creating these intricately detailed designs that felt like they had a history or story to tell. Other brands have taken this trend and produced their own equally wonderful pieces like Damoy, Joanna Laura Constantine and By Alona.

By choosing big and bold jewellery like Savina Chow's necklace you'll be sure to make an impact. Nevertheless, small delicate earrings and rings worn by Lisa Olsson and Maria Kragmann will still catch the eye.

The brightest style of the season, the next trend in the SS20 report is green! After years of predominantly only khaki options, we've now been given a broad spectrum of shades to wear. Victoria Beckham ensured no-one missed her vibrant 'highlighter' midi dress on the runway, Sies Marjan made their vinyl and taffeta designs looked like sweet-wrappers from a Quality Street tin while Dion Lee kept it 'down to earth' with a moss green braided dress.

This really is a trend you can have fun with as the vidid shades radiate happiness and confidence. The colour is best worn as a head-to-toe look - from the simplicity of a midi dress, to the mix and match of singlets, to the sophistication of a two-piece suit. Don't forget to play around with abstract shaped footwear, textured bags and stacked jewellery too.

Up next in the SS20 trend report is one of my favourites - minimalism. The runway was awash with minimal designs taking inspiration from the 90s. Helmut Lang demonstrated the beauty of simple lines, Givenchy delivered simples staples and Bottega Veneta combined classic and relaxed tailoring. Colour palettes are also stripped back with The Row, Nanushka and Bec + Bridge using monochrome and neutral colours.

This trend is part of an overarching theme of wearability and covers all aspects of your life with tailored trousers & oversized blazers for work and silk separates & corset tops for play. Accessories can also play a large part in wearing this trend with strappy sandals, square front mules, soft clutches and leather shoulder bags

The next trend to feature in the report is the epitome of Spring and Summer - pastels. For 2020 this colour palette has a lighter, more sorbet feel then previously with sherbet yellow, ice blue, soft pink and mint green seen on runways and in presentations.

This trend covers a spectrum of clothing, accessories and footwear meaning everyone can buy a little bit of pastel. It seems only natural for these colours to be paired with romantic pieces. Nina Ricci and Cecilie Bahnsen's delicate and floaty dresses just wouldn't feel the same in any other colour. Pastels were also added to voluminous designs as Rotate by Birger Christensen and Alexandre Vauthier brought a bit of the 80s to the present with puff sleeves and prom style skirts.

Maggie Marilyn and influencer Sasha Mei demonstrate how you can easily live in this trend over the next few months with beautifully simple, feminine dresses. Contrastingly, Roland Mouret and Julie Pelipas, contributing fashion director of Ukrainian Vogue, both juxtapose masculine tailoring with soft colours, demonstrating that dressing 'girly' isn't your only option.

First up in the Spring Summer 2020 trend report is utility. Appearing on different runways, each designer had their own interpretation of utility. Max Mara had a strong military influence in their collection, Stella McCartney added in nautical elements with rope waist ties and netted bags and Chloe's designs had an easy ready-to-wear practicality to it.

How 'utility' you want to be is up to you. For the fully committed, pair an oversized trench coat with loose fitting cargo trousers like Sophia Ippoliti. For others, a button up jumpsuit or pocket jacket is the effortless way to wear this trend. Finish an outfit with details like buckle boots and a messenger bag. Although this may feel like a practical trend there's no excuse to miss out on glamour! Dress like Christy Turlington and accessories with stand-out jewellery and a pink lip.

It may feel like you've already seen this trend but utility is an example of how designers and retailers are now evolving trends, meaning their customers can buy a few pieces they love to update their wardrobe rather than replacing the whole of last season. This more environmental way of thinking is present throughout Spring Summer 2020.

Spring and Summer is such an exciting season with the promise of delicate fabrics, lighter colour palates and warm memories to be made wearing these pieces. From the must-have prints to new season denim, these are the trends you'll be wearing this season.

Polka Dots

Loved by the likes of Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn, the polka dot print is timeless and continues to reappear on the runway. From A.W.A.K.E's bold, extra large dots to Valentino’s and Rodarte’s colourful and ditsy spots, there are so many stylish ways to add this print into your Spring/Summer wardrobe.

Safari

SS18's Safari trend is about combining practical pieces with relaxed, casual separates in a colour palette of khaki, straw and ecru. Taking inspiration from Derek Lam and Matthews Adams Dolan, wear a pocket shirt with oversized cuffs and finish the look off with a straw circle bag.

White Denim

The 'ride and die' blue denim has been replaced with white to create very summer-appropriate outfits. But far from being boring, this denim features contrast stitching like Dion Lee and abstract pebble & shell buttons as seen on the Rejina Pyo runway, as a way to give these pieces a new feel.

Pastels

Whether it's mint green, dusty yellow, baby pink, lilac or duck egg blue, designers have made pastel colours cool and fresh rather than cute and ageing. Pastel tones appeared in nearly every style from utility chic at Marta Jakubowski or soft tailoring at Milan Schon, there's no excuse to not be wearing the trend.

Minimal

In a season full of print and colour, the minimal trend offers us another option. The epitome of 90s fashion, the more conscious designer and shopper understands the importance of buying investment pieces that can be worn with nearly anything like Ralph Lauren's bandeau jumpsuit.

Checks

Is there a more appropriate print for Spring than the check? After the popularity of the Prince of Wales check in AW17, the gingham check was featured by many designers. The check came in a spectrum of colours with pastels at Loewe, bold reds at Hermes and dark palates at Fendi which means you can wear print whether the sun is shining or not.

Sportswear

For Spring/Summer this trend is a mixture of practical sportswear pieces with opulent luxurious separates. It may take a brave person to pull off the look a la Louis Vuitton so pick elements of these looks you like best and pair your best party or workwear with your favourite athletic wear.
